Impossible Landscapes – The Nightfloors (Session 5)

Macallistar Building Summer of 1995:

Scene 7 (CF:3) – Coming for more – 8pm
There Thomas stands again in the apartment which is a testament for the last mental state of his daughter.

He grabs again a look at the map he found the day before. There he deciphers that the “Nightfloors” begin on the roof.

While he is studying the map, the yellow sign at the wall is burning in his peripheral vision, making it hard to concentrate.

Corruption Check > 9 vs 5 > rises to 6

Scene 8 (CF:4) – The Smoking Lounge – 8:15pm
Thomas heads upstairs and opens the door to the roof, but instead of the roof he sees something he did not expect.

A Smoking Lounge!

This is a large, inviting area resembling a turn-of-the-20th-century men’s club. The walls are covered in velvet wallpaper, and overstuffed armchairs of burgundy leather dot the floor. A large hearth burns constantly in one wall. A wet bar in a corner is available for anyone’s use. It contains plenty of ice, glasses, unlabeled liquors and liqueurs, bitters, vermouth, olives, limes, lemons, oranges, and other bar goods.
In the opposite corner, a walk-in humidor contains a wide assortment of the finest cigars.
One wall is covered in floor-to-ceiling bookcases made of rosewood, with a rolling stepladder permanently attached to a rail that runs at the midpoint of the shelves.

Dark Die against Insight -> 3 vs 4 -> No additional Insight ->
Thomas kind of is surprised by himself that he expected the unexpected behind that rooftop door.

Is anyone else in the Smoking Lounge with Thomas? -> 50/50 -> Exceptional No ->
Besides being such an inviting place to socialize, the Smoking Lounge is drenched with a feeling of dreary loneliness. No one is here. Thomas feels completly alone.

Thomas seems to follow the corridor for an eternity but no stairs appear. Dissapointed Thomas heads back to the previuos stair case, but it is dissapeared. Thomas is seemingly caught in an endless corridor.

Dark Die (1d6) against Insight and Stress -> 3 vs 4 and 1 > Stress up by 1 >
Thomas gets slightly claustrophobic. How should he ever leave this hell hole?

Are there any doors? 50/50 > Exceptional Yes >

A few moments later, a group of people are seen running through a perpendicular hallway far ahead, wearing silver robes and white masks. By the time Thomas arrives at the location, the figures are nowhere to be seen.

After Thomas climbed the stairs for a while he looks down. But instead of the floor in the distance, all Thomas sees is nothingness, like the staircases would continue endlessly into the floor.

Dark Die against Insight and Stress > 5 > Stress and Insight up by One. >
Thomas slumps down on the stairs. The grown man starts to cry. He is confused and desperate. And besides his urge to find his daughter he is afraid. Afraid never to leave those corridors.

Is someone else in the room? 50/50 > Yes > Random Nightfloor Tenenant > David Langford >

Terrified and disoriented, a man leaps out of a doorway.

His beard is down to his chest, and his strange shock of filthy hair has obviously not been washed in quite some time.

He breaks down, babbling his story over and over and begging to be released from the “prison,” as he incoherently refers to the Macallistar Building.

Scene 11- The Cable guy (CF:6) – 10:30 pm
Does Thomad recognizes the man? > unlikely > Yes >
ThomasW: “Langford? David Langford?”
DavidL:”Yes,yes,YES!!!” David is responding in unfiltered joy that someone is recognizing him.
ThomasW:”You are missing for several months. I saw your case in the TV and some data passing my table. Why are you here?”
DavidL:”I just got here and tried to disconnect a junction at the cable box on the top-floor stair landing, had to follow some cables to the roof. And since then I’m stumbling through this hell of changing corridors and crazy things, eating old cake and hors d’oeuvres and drinking flat champagne and beer. I’m longing for a good old sandwhich!
Are you helping me out? You are a cop right? You must help me!”
Did ThomasW given up on the search of Abby? > Stress test (Succes= The search goes on) > Dark Die against 4 > 3 > Thomas does not give up his daughter (yet)
ThomasW:”I’m very sorry, but I need to find someone first!”
DavidL:”Finding someone? Are you insane? You can be lucky if you not lose yourself in this labyrinth!”
ThomasW:”You not by accident stumbled across a girl named Abigail or an Apartment 12a on the sixth floor?”
Did David encountered Abby or the Apartment> Very Unlikely > Yes > 1-2 Abby, 3-4 Apartment, 5-6 Both > 4 The Apartment > Meaning Tables > mightily sprawl >
DavidL:” I think not a very long time ago, I walked through a corridor, or may be even a hall, where Doors with the number 12a were covering the whole wall, sprawling into what felt infinity!”
ThomasW:”Can you bring me there?”
DavidL:”NO! Are you not listening. If I would be able to find my way around here, do you think I would be still here? So, may be you find the way out before we both get lost.”
ThomasW:”No I will find Abby.”
Does David want to come with Thomas? > likely > Yes
DavidL:”Ok, listen! I will try to help you finding that person. But we should stick together. If we get seperated, who knows for how long!”
ThomasW:”Ok, I think it cannot hurt to have some backup.”

Scene 12 – The Search goes on (CF:5) – 11:00 pm
Thomas tries to find Apartment 12a > Travel through Nightfloors > Corruption check > 1d10 vs 7 > 4 Success
Encounter> 6 Random > Meaning Table > Now Toast

Thomas, with David close behind him, has developed new conviction to find Abby. He set his goal to find the Apartment 12a on six, no matter what.
He prepares himself for a long and tedious journey through the Labyrinth of corridors, expecting endless stairs behind the first corner, just to be greeted by a door with 12a written in metal letters on its front.
ThomasW:”Can this be? After all this back and forth. There it suddenly is?”
DavidL:”I wouldn’t call me an expert how those hallways work, but sometimes, very rarely, they give you exactly what you want.”

Is the door open? 50/50 > Exceptional No >
ThomasW tries to open the door, but not only seems the door locked, the door knob is very hot.

Are signs of fires, like smoke or flames visble through the door? likely > Yes >
Thomas can hear the sound of fire burning and smoke is coming out of the slits of the door.
ThomasW is shouting:”Abby! Abby! Are you in there?”
Is someone responding? > Very unlikely > Exceptional No > Thomas gets no response. But he hears a sound, like something fell down from the ceiling.

Thomas tries to kick in the door > Human Die + Occupation against failure die (hurt leg) > 6 + 3 vs 2 > The Agent succeeds brilliantly and gets something extra. Maybe more than they bargained for. The Handler may confront them with a difficult truth. >

ThomasW expertly kicks in the door. The door flies open. Thomas expected that flames and heat were shooting in his direction, but that was not the case. Instead the smell and sight of cold ash dominated his perception.

But in the middle of the room standing two burned manequins. One seems to be a female, in size and form like Thomas last seen his daughter, and a male one with a burned leather bag full of burned books. It looks like the man tries to hold the female back from leaving the apartment.

Thomas is fighting with tears. Should he accept that Abigail is gone? May be he should leave. May be Abigail left long ago.

ThomasW: “David!”
DavidL:”Yes?”
ThomasW:”You won! We are leaving now!”
