GME: Solo Investigator Handbook

System: Cuthulhu Deep Green

Oracle: Mythic GME 2e

Investigate a suspicious murder.

Location:

Church or ruin.

Bureaucratic Meddling:

Mission is being Audited – any mistakes will have
severely detrimental effects on your career.

Dramatic Situation:

Besieged in an isolated location (farmhouse, office
cubicle, fallout bunker, hotel room), with enemies all
around.

Hostiles:

Hellhounds

Scene Intro:

“Agent John Doe, an agent of The Laundry, stands nervously beside a corpse in the ruins of an old church. He twitchily focuses on the shadows, noticing the shapes of large, dog-like creatures slipping in and out of his focus.

‘How the hell did I get into this mess?’ he thinks. The whole mission was a disaster from the start. He had to fly to the scene at the last minute, to be at the murder site before any official investigation could start. The last-minute flight booking also triggered all the red lights in the internal audit of HR. Travel reimbursement will surely be a doozy.

But if there’s one thing Agent Doe fears more than the wrath of HR, it’s the moving shadows in the shape of men-sized, bodybuilder-like dogs.”

Scene 1: The Pack

Time: 12:00

Story Direction: Discovery > You observe/are caught up in an occurrence directly relating to what you are investigating > Human Die vs. Fail (No Clue) > 6 vs. 4 > Brilliant Success + Dark Truth

John glimpses at the corpse he is here to investigate. He hasn’t had time to thoroughly analyze its condition, but even a brief look reveals that the man lying on the ground, or what is left of him, was ripped apart by animal-like, gigantic bite wounds. Bite wounds inflicted by human-sized, bodybuilder-like dogs! Insight and Stress up from 0 to 1.

John starts sweating. “How can I get out of this mess?” He has a gun, but what good is it here? John tries to concentrate on his training.

Question:

Is John equipped with any protection against the supernatural?

Likely: Yes

Outcome: Random Occult Item from “The Laundry” > Hand of Glory (HOG)

John brings his backpack to his knees, searching for the HOG provided by Q Division. He laughed at them when they described how it worked – like an ugly version of Frodo’s ring, but instead of a ring, it’s a severed human hand that ignites on command. Maybe it would be enough to get out of this mess alive.

Question:

Are the Hellhounds approaching further?

Likely: No

John knows he has only limited time once the hand is activated. He must time it right. Despite nearly being paralyzed with fear, he refuses to leave without a clue.

As the dogs in the shadows still seem to circle him without making a move, he decides to give the corpse a closer look.

Roll: Human Die + OCC > 4, 1 > Competent Success

Agent Describes: Clue via RandomPDF tool > “The Lodge of Dagon”

The corpse is a bloody mess. But what Agent John Doe easily identifies is a necklace with a large golden medallion, stamped with the symbol of “The Lodge of Dagon.” Agent Doe may not have been with The Laundry for long, but he definitely didn’t sleep through “Cults You Should Be Aware Of 101” during his training in Dunwich.

Question:

Are the Hellhounds approaching further? > Likely > Exceptional No > Interestingly Defeated > Offensively Fancy

John sweatingly gripping to the HOG, being prepared to activate it in the moment the dogs from hell make a move, is suddenly ripped out of his focus. The buzzing sound of assault rifle fire is cutting through the air, followed by green tracer rounds, landing in the shadows of the ruin.

The cries of wounded dogs mixed with the sound of something alien yelling is giving John the shivers.

But he is accepting this feeling, as it followed by intense relieve as he sees the source of the fire. It is a Laundry rescue squad, dealing with the dog issue in the same efficient manner, as an exterminator deals with some pesky rats.
